How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Downloading a YouTube thumbnail takes four steps and about ten seconds. The tool reads only the public video ID, so it never needs a login.
- 1Copy the video link. Open the YouTube video and copy its URL from the address bar, or copy the 11-character video ID.
- 2Paste it into the tool. Paste the URL or ID into the input field above and select "Get thumbnails".
- 3Pick a resolution. The tool shows every available thumbnail size, from 120 x 90 up to 1280 x 720.
- 4Download. Select "Download" on the resolution you want. The image saves straight to your device, no watermark.
What thumbnail sizes does YouTube use?
YouTube generates a fixed set of thumbnail sizes for every video and serves them at predictable URLs. There are five: the 1280 x 720 max resolution, used for the HD image on watch pages and external embeds; the 640 x 480 standard size; the 480 x 360 high size, the most widely available; the 320 x 180 medium size; and the 120 x 90 default, used in compact lists. The 1280 x 720 image is generated only for videos uploaded at 720p or higher, which is why some older videos have no HD thumbnail. For most uses, the high or standard resolution is the safe choice because every video has them.
Thumbnail resolution matters for creators because YouTube renders thumbnails at different sizes across the home feed, search, suggested videos, and mobile. A thumbnail that reads clearly at 320 x 180 will survive every surface. If you are studying a competitor's thumbnails, download the high-resolution version so detail and text are legible when you compare them side by side.
Why download a YouTube thumbnail?
The most common reason is competitive research. Thumbnails are the single biggest driver of click-through rate, and studying what works in your niche, the framing, the colour, the use of faces and text, is one of the fastest ways to improve your own. Downloading the high-resolution image lets you build a swipe file and compare patterns properly instead of squinting at feed-sized previews.
Creators also download their own thumbnails to archive them, to reuse them in channel art or end screens, or to A/B test variations. Whatever the reason, treat downloaded thumbnails as reference material: republishing another creator's thumbnail as your own can infringe copyright.
Frequently asked questions
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?+
Paste a YouTube video URL or its 11-character video ID into the tool above and select "Get thumbnails". Every available resolution appears with its own download button. The tool reads nothing but the public video ID, so it works for any public video.
What thumbnail resolutions can I download?+
YouTube stores each video thumbnail at five fixed sizes: max resolution (1280 x 720), standard (640 x 480), high (480 x 360), medium (320 x 180), and default (120 x 90). This tool surfaces all five so you can pick the one you need.
Why is the HD (max resolution) thumbnail sometimes missing?+
YouTube only generates the 1280 x 720 "maxresdefault" image for videos uploaded at 720p or higher. Older or low-resolution uploads will not have it. If the max-resolution preview is blank, use the standard or high-resolution version instead.
Is it legal to download a YouTube thumbnail?+
Downloading a thumbnail for personal reference, research, or competitive analysis is generally fine. Reusing someone else’s thumbnail image in your own content can infringe copyright. Treat downloaded thumbnails as reference material, not as assets to republish.
Do I need a YouTube account or to sign up for Fuse?+
No. The thumbnail downloader is completely free and requires no account, no sign-up, and no browser extension. Paste a link and download.
Can I download thumbnails from YouTube Shorts?+
Yes. A Short has a video ID just like a regular video. Paste the Short’s URL and the tool returns its thumbnail in every available size.
Does this work for private or unlisted videos?+
It works for unlisted videos if you have the link, because the thumbnail image is served publicly. It does not work for fully private videos, whose thumbnails are not publicly accessible.
How do I find a YouTube video’s ID?+
The video ID is the 11-character string after "v=" in a watch URL (youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID) or after the slash in a short link (youtu.be/VIDEO_ID). You can paste either the full URL or just the ID.
Want more than the thumbnail?
Fuse reads a channel's full analytics, ranks it by percentile against thousands of real creators, and turns that data into a content strategy. The thumbnail is one signal; Fuse works with all of them.
