How to Find Your YouTube Outlier Videos (Free, No Signup)

    Updated September 24, 2026 · 10 min read

    TL;DR

A YouTube outlier video is a video at three times or more the channel's median views for its age, which signals a topic or format the audience wanted more than usual. Fuse shows any channel's outliers free with no signup at the tool linked below. This guide covers how to read them and what to make next.

Most of the questions a YouTube creator asks about their own channel start the same way. Which video worked. Why. What to make next. YouTube Studio answers the first question and gives you the raw material for the other two, but it does not surface outliers. This post is the shortest path from "which video worked" to "here is the next one."

    Try it on your channel

Paste your handle, see your outliers. No account.

    Open the Fuse workspace tool

#What counts as an outlier video on YouTube?

A YouTube outlier video is a video that earns three times or more the views of the channel's median video of similar age, typically 3x or more, which signals a topic, title, or format the audience wanted more than usual. The number matters because it is anchored to the channel, not to YouTube overall. A 200,000-view video is an outlier on a channel whose median is 20,000 views, and a normal upload on a channel whose median is 400,000. Same view count, opposite readings.

Two details do the work in that sentence.

The comparison is to the channel's median, not the mean. A single 10-million-view hit skews the mean and makes every other video look like a failure. The median is the middle video after you sort by views. It is a truer picture of what this channel normally does.

The comparison is age-matched. A four-year-old video with 1M views is not a fair reference for a two-week-old upload at 30,000. Real outlier tools bucket videos by age (recent, established, mature) and compute the multiplier inside the bucket. Fuse uses four age cohorts (see how we calculate metrics). Without age matching, every old video looks like a hit and every new video looks like a miss.

The three-times threshold is not sacred. Some creators use 5x, some 4x. Three is the standard baseline because it is roughly where a video breaks out of normal variance and starts being useful as a signal.

#How do I find my outlier videos for free?

The fastest way is to paste your handle into the Fuse workspace tool, which computes your outliers from the public YouTube API and shows the ranked list with no signup. Two clicks. If your channel is public, it works.

    Do it now

Paste your handle at the Fuse workspace tool. The page returns your outliers, the multiplier for each, and the age cohort it was compared against. No account.

If you would rather do it inside YouTube Studio, the manual method is honest work and it teaches you the shape:

    1. Open Studio, Analytics, then Content.
    2. Export the last 90 or 180 days of uploads as a CSV.
    3. Split the rows into Shorts and long-form. Compare each set separately.
    4. Sort by views. Take the median. That is the middle video.
    5. Divide each video's views by the median. Anything at 3x or higher is an outlier. Flag them.

The manual method costs 20 minutes. The tool costs a paste. If you want to check outliers on a channel that is not yours, competitors, mentors, a channel you are considering acquiring, the tool is the only path. Studio never leaves your own account.

Neither path needs a paid subscription to any tool. Fuse is free for this, and Studio has always been free. Save the paid tools for the questions they actually answer better, which comes up in the comparison table below.

#What does a real channel's outliers look like?

Better Creating (@better-creating), a 266,000-subscriber tech and productivity channel, is a clean example because it publishes on a steady schedule and its outliers are easy to see. These are the numbers the free workspace tool shows for the channel today, so you can open it and check them.

Fuse compares each video with the channel's other videos of the same age and the same format. A long video from May 2025 is measured against the channel's long videos from that period, and Shorts are only measured against Shorts. The multiplier is the video's views divided by the median views of that group. For the videos below, the median is 13,143 views across 62 long-form videos (Fuse data, September 2026). The top four:

    1. "The Apple Ecosystem Secrets I Wish I'd Known Earlier!" (2025-05-02), 433,754 views, 33x the same-age median (Fuse data, September 2026).
    2. "The Apple Ecosystem Setup I'd Pick If I Started Again!" (2025-08-01), 229,191 views, 17.4x (Fuse data, September 2026).
    3. "Amazingly Simple iPhone Apps You Haven't Heard of (2026)" (2025-10-04), 194,614 views, 14.8x (Fuse data, September 2026).
    4. "Here's why the iPad Air M4 is the one to pick..." (2026-03-11), 189,431 views, 14.4x (Fuse data, September 2026).

The spread is wide. The typical long video gets about 13,000 views, and 23 of the channel's 80 most recent long videos clear 3x (Fuse data, September 2026). On a channel like this the median video is small and the hits carry the view count, so raw views tell you very little about which videos beat expectations.

Two videos you might expect near the top aren't there. "I Used Every 2026 MacBook for a Month" has the most views of any 2026 video, 244,830, but it lands at 7.8x because it's compared with the channel's newer videos, whose median is 31,389 (Fuse data, September 2026). "I Wore These Smart Glasses For 4-months: Nobody Noticed" shows 44x, but it's compared with only 8 recent videos, some just days old, so Fuse marks it low confidence. Give a new video a few months before you trust its multiplier.

The pattern is clearer than any single video. The channel's seven biggest reliable breakouts, from 9x to 33x, are all Apple hardware and setup videos (Fuse data, September 2026). The Notion and AI videos break out too, just smaller: "Notion Agent Just Changed Notion Forever" is at 5.3x and "Notion Tutorial for Beginners 2025" at 4.2x (Fuse data, September 2026). The top four titles also share a shape. Each promises the creator's own pick or something the viewer hasn't heard of: secrets I wish I'd known, the setup I'd pick, apps you haven't heard of, the one to pick.

If I were Better Creating, the brief for the next video would be simple. Apple hardware or setup, one subject, and a title that promises the creator's own pick or something the viewer doesn't know yet.

Try this method on your channel

Open the Fuse workspace tool and paste your handle. If you have ten or more videos, your outliers appear ranked with the multiplier. No account.

#Why did my outlier videos work?

An outlier works for one of four reasons, and the readings do not overlap: topic demand, title pattern, format or length, and thumbnail. The job when you have three or more outliers on the board is to figure out which reading applies, because the reading is what you repeat next.

Topic demand. The audience wanted more videos about that specific subject. Signs: the outliers cluster around one topic (Apple hardware, Notion Agents, tax law), and other titles about the same topic also over-perform even without the exact hook. Better Creating fits this reading: its seven biggest reliable breakouts are all Apple videos, while its Notion and AI videos break out at about 3x to 5x.

Title pattern. The audience responded to a specific shape of promise, regardless of topic. Signs: the outliers share a phrasing (first-person outcome, "The truth about Y," "what nobody tells you," numbered lists), but the topics are unrelated. Better Creating's top four share a personal-pick or insider promise (secrets I wish I'd known, the setup I'd pick, apps you haven't heard of, the one to pick). Because the topics also cluster, this channel is a topic reading with a title pattern layered on top.

Format or length. The audience wanted a different kind of video from you. Signs: the outliers are all deep dives when the median is a roundup, or all under seven minutes when the median is fifteen, or all tutorials when the median is commentary. Compare the outlier's runtime and structure to the median video's, and if it is different, that is your reading.

Thumbnail. The audience clicked because the thumbnail broke pattern. Signs: the outlier's thumbnail uses a different composition, different color palette, or different subject framing than the channel's typical style. Thumbnail is the hardest to read because you cannot see impressions on someone else's channel; on your own, cross-reference with Studio's impressions and CTR to confirm.

Most outliers are two of the four at once. Better Creating's top four are topic (Apple hardware) plus title pattern (a personal pick or insider promise). That is the actionable pair. The next brief tries to hit both, not one.

#What should I make next after finding an outlier?

Pick one of three moves per outlier: same topic, adjacent angle. Same title pattern, new topic. Same format, everything else different. Do not do all three at once, and do not stack all three moves on the same outlier.

Same topic, adjacent angle. The audience showed up for Apple hardware. Next video stays on Apple hardware from a different angle: one product the channel has not covered, a specific setup, or a comparison against the obvious alternative. The bet is topic demand carries.

Same title pattern, new topic. "The 6K Monitor Apple Wished Didn't Exist" worked. Next video: "The Notion Feature Notion Wishes You'd Stop Using." Different topic, same contrarian insider shape. The bet is the pattern carries.

Same format, everything else different. The single-subject Apple hardware deep dive worked. Next video is a single-subject deep dive on a product category the channel has not covered. The bet is the format carries.

Ship one at a time. If you ship three variations on the same outlier in a single week, you cannot tell which move worked. Ship the next video, wait two weeks for it to settle, then read the multiplier against the median. If it is above 3x, the move was correct. If it is below, try a different move next.

The mistake I see most often is chasing the exact outlier. A creator sees one video hit and remakes the same video with a slightly better thumbnail. The audience has already seen it, and the algorithm has already recommended it, so the remake underperforms. The three moves above extract the signal without repeating the video.

#Which tools find YouTube outliers, and what do they cost?

Every mainstream YouTube analytics tool computes outliers now, but the meaningful differences are whether the tool works on any channel, whether it needs a signup, and what the paid tier actually adds. I verified each vendor's price on their public pricing page on 2026-09-23. Where the price was not published in a scrapeable form, I left the cell blank rather than guess.

Fuse is one of the tools in this table and it is on the Fuse blog. I built Fuse. I tried to keep the comparison fair, and the differences that matter here (signup and free-tier scope) are structural, not judgment calls. Prices came from the vendors' own pages. If you think the comparison is off, tell me and I will update it.

The read on the table is short. If you already pay for vidIQ or TubeBuddy, their outlier views are good and you should use them. If you do not, and you want to check outliers on your own channel or any other, Fuse's workspace tool is free with no signup. That is the entire reason this post exists.

The best YouTube analytics tools 2026 roundup has the deeper comparison on features beyond outliers. And you can compare pricing tiers if you want to see what Fuse Pro adds on top of the free outlier view.

#Do outliers matter for small channels?

Yes, above ten videos. Under ten videos, the channel has no reliable median, so the outlier multiplier is statistical noise. A 3x outlier on a five-video channel is one video that happened to land higher than the other four, which tells you almost nothing.

Once the channel is at ten videos or more, the outlier is often the most useful signal on the channel. Small channels do not yet have retention data at scale, and click-through rate is volatile because impressions are low. Outliers are the first place the algorithm's early feedback shows up cleanly.

The threshold shifts on small channels too. On a channel with a 500-view median, a 5,000-view video is a 10x outlier and worth reading. On a 500,000-view median, a 5,000-view video is a miss. Absolute view counts do not travel. Multipliers do.

The practical read on a small channel: publish through the first ten videos on curiosity and range, then start reading multipliers on video eleven and after. The first two outliers usually reveal the niche the channel is actually pointed at, which is often narrower than the creator planned.

#How often should I check for outliers?

On every upload once the video is 14 days old, and again in a weekly review of the last 90 days. Two windows because outliers show up on two schedules.

The upload check catches the fast outlier. Some videos are outliers from launch, high CTR, high early retention, lots of suggested traffic in the first week. By day 14 the shape is clear. Read the multiplier, decide the next move, ship the follow-up.

The weekly review catches the slow outlier. Some videos are normal for weeks and then catch fire on search or suggested. The video launched at 8,000 views, sat at 12,000 for a month, then jumped to 60,000 over the following two weeks. That is a search or algorithmic tail, and the signal it carries is different from a launch hit. Weekly review makes sure you do not miss it.

The subscriber count tool and channel stats page both pull from the same public data as the workspace tool, so if you want to spot-check a channel without opening the outlier view, either of those works.

#What is the one thing to remember about YouTube outliers?

An outlier is the audience telling you which of your videos they wanted. The multiplier tells you how loudly. Read the pattern across three or more outliers, pick one of three moves, ship the next video, and re-check in two weeks. If the free workspace tool is enough for that loop, do not pay for a paid tool. If it is not, the comparison table above has the honest options.

Run this on your channel now

Paste your handle at the Fuse workspace tool. You will get your outliers, the multiplier for each, and the age cohort. No account, no email, no card.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a YouTube outlier video?
A YouTube outlier video is a video that earns three times or more the views of the channel's median video of similar age. It signals a topic, title, or format the audience wanted more than usual. Some tools use a stricter threshold, four times or five times, but three times is the standard baseline.
Is a 2x video an outlier?
No, by the standard definition. A 2x video is above the channel's baseline but is still inside the normal range for most channels. Watch it for a pattern, but do not chase it as a hit yet. Most outlier tools, including Fuse, start flagging at three times the median.
Do Shorts count as outliers next to long-form?
No. Shorts and long-form get compared separately because their view distributions are different. A Short at 500,000 views is normal on many channels; a long-form video at the same count is often an outlier. Compare Shorts to Shorts and long-form to long-form, or the multiplier is meaningless.
Can I see another channel's outliers?
Yes. Fuse computes outliers for any public YouTube channel with no signup at the workspace tool. YouTube Studio only shows your own channel. vidIQ, TubeBuddy, Viewstats, and OutlierKit will surface other channels' outliers, but each requires an account, and most gate the useful views behind a paid tier.
Why does YouTube Studio not show outliers?
YouTube Studio does not index videos against a channel's own baseline. It shows absolute numbers, retention curves, traffic sources, and impressions, video by video. You can compute your outliers manually from Studio's data by exporting views and calculating a median, but Studio itself does not label a video an outlier.
    What is the outlier multiplier?
The outlier multiplier is the ratio of a video's views to the channel's median view count for videos of similar age. A video at 100,000 views on a channel whose age-matched median is 20,000 views has a 5x multiplier. Age matching matters. A four-year-old video on the channel is not a fair comparison to a two-week-old upload.
Do outliers matter for small channels?
Yes, once the channel has at least ten videos. Under ten videos, there is no reliable median, so the multiplier is noise. Above ten videos, the small-channel outlier is often the most useful data point on the channel, because a 5x video is often the first hint of the niche the algorithm will start recommending.
How often should I check for outliers?
On every upload, once the video is at least 14 days old, and again in a weekly review. Views stabilize after two to three weeks for most videos, so a fresher measurement is unstable. The weekly review catches long-tail outliers, videos that were normal at launch and slowly caught fire on suggested or search.
Does the outlier multiplier change over time?
Yes, in two directions. A video that keeps accumulating views raises its own multiplier over time, which is why an eight-month-old outlier can look larger than a two-week-old outlier of the same launch size. And the channel median moves up or down as new videos land, so today's outlier can become tomorrow's baseline.
Are outliers a good signal for what to make next?
They are the best free signal you have. Retention, click-through rate, and subscriber conversion are stronger, but they are gated inside YouTube Studio. Outliers are visible on any channel. They tell you which video the audience picked out of the ones you offered, and the pattern behind that pick is often the next video's brief.
What tools find YouTube outliers for free?
Fuse, at the tool linked in this post, is free and needs no signup. YouTube Studio is free but only for your own channel, and it does not label outliers, you compute them. vidIQ, TubeBuddy, Viewstats, and OutlierKit each have a free trial or capped free tier, then paywall the actual outlier view.
What if my channel has no outliers?
Every channel with ten or more videos has outliers by definition, because there is always a highest video. What you are asking is whether the highest is meaningfully above the baseline. If the top video sits at less than 2x the median, the channel is unusually consistent. Publish more to spread the distribution, then re-check.
